Milestone

Well, I was going to go on and on..but I don’t have the data to back up my assertion.

I did PT this morning, then drove to the Riverplex and, starting at the gravel road next to the playground, walked to the Bishop Hill road and back, then added a .6 loop to get 8+ (I counted it as 8.2 miles)

My Garmin had it at 8.02 but it was a bit more, though probably not 8.43.

Slight discomfort on the up, felt outstanding on the down.

The online pedometer has the out part as 3.86; Garmin had 3.75, which makes sense. Out was 55 minutes, back was 51:40. 14:15 pace out, 13:23 pace back.

Memorial Day

No game today; might watch the Eastern Conference finals.

PT (lengthy)

pull ups/push ups. Something different.
10 crunch pull ups, 2 sets of 5 attempting to “reset/crunch”; first set sucked.

2 sets of 5, moving the knees slighly ahead. Better.

4 sets of 3 chin ups, again trying to limit the swing

2 sets of 5 mixed grips.

then push ups:3 sets of 30 slant, 20 flat.

4 mile walk; well 4.2 ish: 14:30 at Moss and MacArthur (it wasn’t what the course correction said, but my Garmin was in a “cheat me” mode, and gave me credit for 4.1 when it was really 4.2-4.3 or so.

Note: pain was no factor. Wore heavier shoes and walked steadily. 13:40 final mile; 27:44 for my last 2.

Then downstairs:

Swiss Bar bench: 10 x 134, then a set of 1 x 170, 1 x 165, 1 x 160, 3 x 155, 3 x 150, 4 x 145, 4 x 139, 5 x 134

Shrugs: 3 sets of 10 x 52 handles (each arm)

curls: 3 sets of 10: 2 with dumbbells, 1 with curl bar.

high incline: 3 sets of 7 x 94

Took a long time but..

Fizzle and Frazzle

Well, last night’s game (seen with Tracy): the box score tells the story:

It started very well and in the 9’th: the 3’rd Chiefs reliever (who was good in the previous innings) loaded the bases with 2 walks and a single. Then came the next reliever who got a strike out..then gave up a single to tie the game. Then came strike out no. 2. Then..broken bat hit into right field..ok, that is one run..but the fielder misplays the ball and it gets by him. That allows all 3 base runners to score.

And that was basically the game.

Tracy and I had a nice sunset. B still does not like baseball.

Oh, the workout today:

PT, deadlifts downstairs: 10 x 134, 10 x 190, 10 x 225 low

10 x 255 4 inch, then 4 x 300 8 inch. These felt, well, good.

Then to the Forest Park Nature Center for an “outer loop” plus: 59:50 (49:57 at Wilderness, 40:27 at Possum Path. Total was 4.38 (due to parking lot); extra was Cardinal to Bee Tree..up that big hill again.

The milestones, such as they are: most miles in a month since, well, I don’t know when. I’d say: maybe 2019? Maybe earlier? I am at 139 miles for May with more days to come.

Where these 30-36 mile weeks will lead to: not sure. I can see upping one walk to 10 and another walk to 20 which would be an addition of 20 miles..but that is in the distant future, if it comes at all.

Just enough

I had thought about trying for 8 miles, but given some “oh so slight” off and on ache at 3, I decided to get 5.15 and then see how much more I wanted to do. I added a 1.15 mile loop to get 6.3

I think my watch shorted me at the start; perhaps 0.05 total. Note that the final 3 was faster than the first 3. Cool and breezy and enough for today.

Toward Memorial Day

I am slowly overcoming inertia for a project. I have something to perk me up.

Now about last night: The Chiefs lost to the Loons 2-1 in a game that ended with a double play and the tying run on 3’rd. Harry and Vickie were there, and I got a selfie with Homer:

This morning: I was lazy again; PT, then pull ups outside:

10 crunch singles, 2 sets of 5 crunch chin singles, 7 pull ups, 5 pull ups, 5 chins, 5 chins, 5 singles, 5 chin singles

then 3 sets of 30 slant push ups, 1 set of 10 flat.

Walk 4.1 miles (ok)

downstairs:

Bench: 7 x 134 Swiss, Drop set of 1 x 165, 2 x 160, 3 x 155, 3 x 150, 4 x 145, 5 x 139, 6 x 134

shrugs: 3 sets of 10 with 52 lb. handles

high incline: 3 sets of 5 x 105

curls: 2 sets with dumbbells (22), 1 set with barbell

Mixed

Last night: The Chiefs fell behind 3-0 in the top of the first. But, as is the case many times this year, they crawled back into it, and hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 9’th to extend the game to extra innings: 3-3.

But in the top of the 10’th: the dam caved in. The Loons started with a “ghost runner” on 2’nd, got a walk..new pitcher who promptly gave up a double. The carnage continued until it was 7-3. The Chiefs got one run in the bottom, but it was not enough.

I was kind of bummed that there weren’t more people here, but the Chiefs seem to rely on group sales; the walk up market is still soft.

Workout notes:

One of the weirdness is that, while a “long” (for me, right now) hike leaves me with sore legs, it rarely affects my lifting. So I did PT, and some trap bar deadlifts:

10 x 134, 10 x 184 (low), 10 x 256 (4 inch), 4 x 300 (8 inch; felt the form start to get ragged and so quit)

Dare I say that these felt GOOD? They did; no pain of any kind, though the legs and glutes got tired.

Then walking on the Riverfront: Garmen got 5.27 but the course correction gave me 0.2 miles more; I’d guess is 5.35 is about right.

Wishing for a time machine

But there is no time machine.

Workouts:

Monday: PT, pull ups, push ups, 5 mile walk, weights

Note: 80 F when I finished.

Pull ups: 10 crunch singles, 5 chin singles, 5 chin singles, 10 pull up singles, 5 pull, 5 chins, 5 mixed, 5 mixed.

Push ups: 30 slant, 6 sets of 10 flat, 30 slant.

Then the walk.

Bench: 10 x 134 Swiss. Miss 165, but pin pressed 134, then 5 reps, then 7 reps

shrug: 3 sets of 10 with 52 handles

high incline: 3 sets of 7 with 94

curls: 2 with dumbbells, 1 with curl bar (light)

Today: PT (some extra chest taps),

FPNC 7 miler from the tower: 7:24, 26:54, 1:09:07, 27:32, 7:59. Was not feeling it like I did 2 weeks ago, but it was 80 F and there was a little ache during the first part of the outer loop. 2:18 total: better than I did in 2019.

Overall, the back stood up to it well.

Baseball The Chiefs hosted the Great Lakes Loons and both teams started first round draft picks on the mound (Loons are a Dodgers affiliate).

And while they were on the mound: zero runs. It was 0-0 after 7. The Loons got 1 in the 8’th and 1 in the top of the ninth. But then the Chiefs rallied.

Their star got a hit to lead off the 9’th.

Then a HBP moved got us runners on 1’st and 2’nd, then a hit to right field drove in the speedy star and moved runners to 2n’d and 3’rd. It was now 2-1.

Then a deep fly to felt scored the runner from 3’rd, and there was only 1 out with a runner at 3’rd. So an intentional walk put us with runners at 1’st and 3’rd, and the Chiefs finished the job with a perfect squeeze bunt.

The Peoria Chiefs are a lot of fun to watch.

What I was looking for yesterday

I did: PT, walk, weights. Now this is the walk I was looking for yesterday; I had forgotten that I did deadlifts on Friday. I never walk well the “day after” deadlifts.

No, this was a not a great walk by any means (and it was probably about 6.3 or so) but I had to rest about 15-20 minutes prior to starting weights.

Pull ups: 2 sets of 5 singles (pull, chin) then 3 sets of 10, allowing for a toe tap. Then 2 sets of 5 singles (chins) Yes, I use a knees up position but try to NOT turn it into a “kip”.

Then downstairs: bench: 10 x 134, “long drop set”: 1 x 165, 1 x 160, 2 x 155, 2 x 150 (could not lock out 3’rd rep), 4 x 145, 5 x 134, 5 x 134 (all with the Swiss bar)

Shrugs: 3 sets of 10 with 52 lb handles

high incline: 7, 7, 6 x 94 (last set was very strict)

curls: 3 sets of 10.

This was enough for today. Arms are achy.

Good and bad

Well, the bad was that I was hoping I could do 6-7 miles, but at about 3.5 or so, I was feeling that dull ache (confirmed by rolling it after I got back; hot spot) so I stopped at 5. Good: that I find “only 5 miles” to be disappointing.

I did get to watch Bradley’s 4-3 walk off win over Belmont, to salvage at least one win in the series.

BU looked like it was going to take a 4-2 lead in the 7’th when, with bases loaded and 1 out, a ground ball was thrown to home for the force out, but it appeared that the first basemen did not catch the throw..the ball popped out and 2 runs scored, but this was overturned on review (evidently the first baseman had the ball long enough for the force out at first).

Then BU was down 3-2 in the 9’th (Belmont got a run in the top of the 9’th) when the first batter reached second on a bad throw on a ground ball. Next batter was HBP. Then a bunt was misplayed to load the bases.

Sacrifice fly scored a run and moved runners to 3’rd and 2n’d. Intentional walk. Then a single ended the game.

This was not a great season for the Braves, but it was nice to end the regular season with a win.

Getting caught up

I am wondering if I should back off of the workouts a little; I found myself somewhat tired yesterday.

I did see some Bradley baseball: a 4-0 loss to Belmont which featured a towering home run to left field.

BU got 6 hits and also got some good connects, but many times, the best balls Bradley hit were to deep center field.

Workout wise:

Thursday: PT, pull ups, push ups, 5 mile walk, then weights.

How it went down: pull ups: 10 singles, 5 chin singles, 5 chin singles, sets of 6 pulls, 6 pulls, 5 chins, 5 chins, 5 singles, 5 single chins.

Push ups: 30 slant, 30 slant, 20 flat, 20 flat.

Then the walk.

Downstairs: super set (3 rounds) of bench, shrugs (farmer’s walk handles) high incline, curls.

Bench: 7 x 134, drop set of (1 x 160, 2 x 155, 3 x 150, 3 x 145, 4 x 139) 5 x 134

high incline: 7, 7, 10 with 94

shrug: 10 x 52 each arm

curls: usual (10 x 50)

The walk was my 3 hill lower loop plus some flat stuff.

Today: went to a visitation so I had to get it in earlier:

PT, deads: 10 x 134, 10 x 184, 10 x 204 (trying to hip hinge)

10 x 260 8 inch

Then the walk: like the old 4.1 but with Cornstalk hill too.

Physically: left knee on a downhill (resolved), and I have some muscle soreness (not pain, not radiating pain) in my lumbar, toward the side (lower lats?)
