Revving up…

September was bad. October will be worse. November will be terrible. That’s all I will say (work stuff).

I still got in a decent workout: weights before a work meeting, walk afterward (morning off)

PT with pull ups (only 10 flat push ups) 10 single pull ups, 2 sets of 5 singles chin ups, 7 + 3 chins, 5+5 pull ups, 2 sets of 5 (chins, pulls).

Finished off with a 20 second (lift to down) pull up, 25 second (lift to down) chin up hold.

Downstairs to the Swiss bar: 6 x 134, 5 x 150, 5 x 150, 4 x 150 (missed rep 5), 1 x 134 pin press, 5 x 134 pause bench press.

3 sets of shrugs.

3 sets of 7 x 94 high incline

3 sets of 10 curls.

Then the meeting.

Then the walk: 4.10 miles in 58:26 (very slow start again); this was Lower Bradley Park with a wide path out. Return mile was 13:46.

5K walk tomorrow; we’ll see how it goes.

Dark walk

It is reflective gear season again and my first 3 miles were slow.

Ok, this ap doesn’t show that; my Garmin had 3 14:5x miles but, you know how it goes; watch recorded 6.3 and there was just a bit of tightness. I might next try this with the wide turn in both directions.

This semester: tons of meetings. But…this is going to be a very hard semester.

Slowing the downward slide

I post videos of some of my sets so I can post the videos here. And from time to time, I get encouragement and someone will say “someday you’ll be able to do more”, when in fact, that “someday” was in the past.

Working out is different for older people.

I am trying to slow the downward slide down.

Back: I’m pleased that I can walk much further than I could 2 years ago..even 1 year ago. But..the number one signal is my feet: tingling in the soles. That is a classic S1-L5 stenosis symptom. I need to be a bit more intentional with my lower lumbar stretches…several times a day. The radiating glute pain and the lower back stiffness is much, much, much better. But that is L3-L4 stuff.

And no…tingling feet is not a reason for surgery, I think.

Workout notes: PT with pull ups (chins too) and push ups.
Pull ups: sets of 5 singles to 20, then 8 + 3 pull ups 7+3 chin ups, 5 pull ups, 5 chins and 2 hold sets (one pull up, one chin).
Push ups (mixed in): 4 sets of 10 flat, 3 sets of 20 slant.

Downstairs: 4 sets of 5 x 94 high incline, in between:
10 x 134 4 inch, 10 x 134 low, 10 x 184 low, 10 x 225 low, 10 x 266 4 inch (tough set)

belt squats: 2 sets of 10 x 45 kg plus pin.

Later: 2 commuter 2 mile walks (15:56, 16:36 pace) with an outrageous hat.

Away or toward the storm?

That is a cryptic remark made about work..who knows where it will lead?

Now I did have a decent workout (slight ache): PT and a 7 mile walk

This puts me at 122.6 miles for September with more coming (I hope; one never knows for sure) This was a 3 loop course; two Cornstalk loops and one lower loop. My Garmin got it at 7; I think it was 7.1 (no 15:30 mile is realistic)

Oh, yes, I got a flat fixed.

Toward the end of September

Workout notes: 2 commuter walks of about 2 miles each. 15:37 and 17:39 were the paces. Weights and PT first.

Did PT mixed with pull ups: 10 singles pull ups, 10 singles chin ups (on the 10 seconds), 5 singles pull ups, 5 singles chin ups. 4 sets of 5 (chins, pulls), then 2 single holds (chin, pull); mixed in was 6 sets of 10 flat push ups, 2 sets of 20 slant push ups.

Downstairs: bench: (Swiss bar), 7 x 134, 5 x 134 pause bench, 3 sets of 5 x 145

shrugs (3 sets of 10)

high incline: 3 sets of 7 x 94

curls: 3 sets of 10.

“tiring” weekend

The downers:

  1. Evidently I ran over a nail last weekend. Though I made an online appointment, evidently, the online place was disconnected from the actual store, which was closed. So, I’ll have to find time this week.
  2. Covid/flu/RSV vaccines kind of knocked a bit out of me. Though I had enough to workout yesterday and make the Illinois game, I was still sort of tired today.

The workouts: yesterday, 5.1 miles at 14:02 minutes per mile; 4.2 Cornstalk hill course plus and extra mile. Not fast, not super slow but I felt flushed afterward; almost as if I had done a race (not quite)

Today: after my aborted appointment for the tires, I did some deadlifts and belt squats which went well:

10 x 134 4 inch, 10 x 134 low, 10 x 184 low, 10 x 225 low, 10 x 265 4 inch, 5 x 300 8 inch (had more in me). Then belt squats: 88 plus pin, 99 plus pin (wider legs). Then my 2 mile walk (2.1 actually) took 31:30 or so; not my usual 29. I decided to end it; I had 32 miles for the week.

The game:

I’ll just state what I said:

And that is sort of what happened. Illinois mistakes (turnover, penalty, failing on 4’th and short on the first drive) lead to FAU taking an early 10-0 lead. The Illini rallied; first they used a flea flicker to the tight end to get in scoring position, then a long pass on a drive just before the half to take a 14-10 lead going into the half.

In the second half, a drive ended in a touchdown but a missed extra point to make it 20-10.

Then, an FAU drive ended with a missed 32 yard field goal. Then the Illini got a field goal to make it 23-10.

But the FAU drove up missed on 4’th down inside the 20. The Illini fumbled the ball back, but FAU failed to covert again..it remained 23-10.

But in the 4th quarter, FAU drove and got a touchdown to pull within 6. The Illini were able to control it…and with only 1 time out, FAU appeared to let an Illini runner score but the Illini runner deliberately went down inside the 10 in order to let the Illini run out the clock.

Barbara went with me and I treaded us to club seats…very pleasant.

Note: Illinois claimed 55K was there…not even close

All three shots

flu, RSV, and the updated COVID shot. Yeah, some chills and very sore arms, even though I walked 2 miles afterward. I should have done arm stuff.

Workout: PT, pull ups: Here I did 20 on the 10 second, 10 singles, 5 single chins, 5 single chins, 7 pull ups, 5 chin ups, and 1 hold, mixing in the PT and 5 sets of 10 flat push ups.

Downstairs: bench with the Swiss bar: 7 x 134, 3 sets of 5 x 145, 4 x 150.

shrugs (3 sets of 10), curls (3 sets of 10) then high incline: 10 x 85, 10 x 90, 8 x 95

Then the first of my 2 mile walks on the treadmill (12:54 pace); the commuter walk outside (in the afternoon) was done at 15:47

Work: getting hectic….unavoidable. Sore throat: almost totally gone.

Video: I actually have back muscles..and loose skin.

Wet one

5.1 miles (Cornstalk loop plus a campus loop) in 1:10:54; it rained (light to moderate) throughout. I was ok; pain free (more and more these days).

I think that I’ve hit a happy medium.

I am sopping wet here and the shirt is oversize on me; I’ve trimmed down over the past 2-3 years. Still have 10-15 lb extra.

A wise man once said: nothing.

And so I won’t. But, well, I guess the mouth stays shut for now.

Speaking of mouth: sore throat is much better; did use 3 lozenges all day. No cough..able to eat an orange.

Workout notes: PT with pull ups: lots of sets of 5, (50 reps), with 3 more holds. Push ups mixed in: 2 sets of 20 slant, 6 sets of 10 flat.

Downstairs: bench (mixed in) 7, 7 10 with 134 (Swiss bar)

Deadlift: all 4 inch handle: 10 x 134, 10 x 184, 10 x 234, 10 x 265

Belt squats: 2 sets with 40 kg plus pin (96 lb)
Later: two 2-mile commuter walks to get just over 4.3 miles for the day.

Body seems to be responding well.

Cruelty vs Ignorance

From here. Yes, I believe in enforcing ordinances for the public good, such as no stopping, regulation of markets, etc. And I would be irritated if people just set up shop on walkways, especially next to busy roads.

But there is cruelty too: destroying someone’s property; and the individual in question has been charged.

Convincing others That which makes your “tribe” cheer may well not convince anyone outside of your own tribe. I doubt that this would flip anyone to the pro-choice side.

Workout notes I felt a bit tired; still dealing with a sore throat (which appears to be getting better, slowly. No cough drops today; no cough in a while.

So, I did a 7 mile walk; 2 Cornstalk loops for about 5.5 then added 1.5 around campus and Rebecca just a bit. Pace was 14:28 though the final 2 miles were sub 14. Weight after the cool weather walk was 187.5. All is well, save the throat.
