Before the storm

I got up to beat the storm; I did PT and then started the walk at 7:23: 30 degrees. Finished: 9:00: 19 degrees. Slight outside the hip discomfort at times. Somewhat slippery at times..not terrible.

Later: drove SLOWLY to the Bradley Basketball game; they won 74-55 in a game that was not that “close”; they had a 30 point lead late; it was 36-19 at the half. The defense was smothering.

Not many were there though.

Into December

Ok, my mileage: 122.9 in November, up from 107.5 in October, 97.2 in September and 85.9 in August. And on 14 November, I went off of NSAIDS. Great.

Yesterday:

I did push ups (4 sets of 25) mixed with PT, deadlifts (10 x 134, 10 x 184, 10 x 228) then the first walk, then 50 pull up reps…

Today: just PT and a 10K-ish hilly walk; note I did have some “sensation” at times during the hilly segements.

This was my first “icicles in the beard” walk of the season.

Last night: some Bradley basketball.

The first half was close as Bradley missed some open shots and Northern Iowa made some tough shots. But the averages caught up; BU’s good defense shined all night long, and Bradley won comfortably 68-53.

Tragically, an elderly pedestrian was killed crossing the street in front of the Civic Center; this shut down the street and lead to the smaller than expected crowd shown.

Too late of a start

Did not get everything I wanted to get done, but I did PT and managed a 90-95 percent pain free 10K walk; note I do wake up with a stiff back, and yes, the heartburn (too much hot sauce) is getting to me again.

I did catch the Bradley Women’s basketball game; BU lost in overtime 71-68, but did rally 18-6 in the final quarter to get it to overtime to begin with.

Down by 1 with 13 seconds left, BU had the ball, got trapped, had to call time out, and the inbounds pass was stolen which lead to a BU foul.
Final 3 point shot was blocked.

Yes, B came from PT to join me, unexpectedly. That was a treat.

Midbreak

Last night, I drug Ms. O to a BU Women’s basketball game vs NAIA Missouri Baptist. And while it ended 66-46, Baptist had it tied at 39 going into the 4’th and lead 42-40 in the 4’th before being outscored 26-4 the rest of the way. BU put more defensive pressure on the ball and forced a ton of turnovers. This could have also been depth talking as well.

Sadly, but predictably, the arena was all but empty.

Today’s workout:

PT plus push ups: 30, 30, 40…got it! Pull ups: 50 reps (53 if you count partials plus 3 penalty reps), deadlifts (10 x 134, 10 x 184, 10 x 228, all low handle)

Then 3.2 miles of walking at a brisk-ish pace. My legs actually felt good; 30’s and sunny. I wore long sleeves; no sweatshirt.

Health: yeah, I had a reflux flare up but a strong antacid knocked it out within 10-15 minutes. Back: not an issue.
No, I am not healed; I am in a “management” situation. But at long last I don’t feel like talking about it.

Things that give me heartburn

Well, last night, I caught Bradley’s 89-61 win over an Eastern Michigan team that played Michigan to a 5 point game. I was surprised they won so impressively; it was 41-21 at the half and the lead eventually reached 34 points.

The claimed attendance was 4110, but there were not that many there.

The game itself: this is the best I’ve seen Bradley play since the NCAA tournament years.

But prior to the game, I had Korean meatballs and I had the worst heartburn that I’ve had since 1999; this included radiating pain to my shoulder blades and jaw. But heartburn it was; water helped, then at home, a strong antacid pill knocked it out, completely. But I laid off of the spicy food today.

Today: well, seeing the score of the women’s game vs Wisconsin: 103-49; yes, I thought the team was in trouble when it struggled with a D2 team. This will be a gory season. Note: last year, they BEAT Wisconsin at home, prior to key injuries sending the season downhill.

Workout notes: did it differently today. Started off with PT and push ups: 30, 30, 30, 20. Then downstairs for deadlifts: 10 x 134, 10 x 184, 10 x 228 all low.

Then my walk (footing was ok)

Then pull ups: included 20 singes, sets of 5, etc.

Lunch: commuter walk.

Back at it

Got to get some studying in tonight.

Caught the Bradley Women hosting South Dakota (Elite 8 last year, but brand new team and coach this year) and, BU actually lead 24-15. SD rallied to take a modest half time lead and when on to win 71-53.

SD isn’t what they were last year (got thumped by Creighton last game) but they were too much for us…eventually.

Workout notes: PT, deadlifts, very so-so but totally painless walk.

10 x 134, 10 x 184, low
10 x 261 4 inch, 10 x 280 8 inch. The 4 inch set was not that bad.

She will not be ignored

Just as I was getting cocky, teaching my 10-11 am class reminded me that I still have this chronic condition; some ache on my walk home (nothing like the mean days of earlier this year)

I still have to mind my posture.

Now the daily walks have been thus far

3+3, 3, 2+1, 5, 2+1, 5, 2+1 =28 miles, which is more than I am used to. I have to be cautious.

Today: I mixed it up a bit: PT with 2 sets of 25 pushups

pull ups: sets of 5 and 5 singles, with shoulder PT: 50 reps

PT, and 2 more sets of 25 push ups

Bench: 10 x 134, and 17 minutes to do 5 sets of 3 x 165

high incline: 3 sets of 10 x 94, with 2 sets of curls

Then the first 2 mile walk; second one was lunch.

Basketball I saw the women open in an exhibition vs. a D2 college and, it was uncomfortably tight for a while; it seemed as if the D2 team had a quickness advantage.

BU won but…

Well, last night it was a 45 point loss (93-48) which was 20 points after 1 quarter, albeit to a good Missouri team. This might be a tough season.

Crazy, Crazy

Somewhat busy. Election results tonight.

Yesterday : 2 mile walk in the AM, commuter walk (both went great), PT, weights: did bench 10 x 134, 4 sets of 4 x 160, 2 sets of 10 x 94 Swiss bar high incline, curls.

Today: Not my fastest 5 miler, but I did the lower loop in Bradley park, AFTER a flat, slow 1 mile loop (15:00)

Some very mild off/on pain, similar to what I used to feel on flat 2 milers.

I watched Bradley blow out D2 Parkside 93-59, in a game that was 45-28 at the half, and saw BU play everyone.

Onward to basketball season

Still up early; PT, swim (2200 yards); done a bit differently.
1000 of 100 side, 100 free, 100 back, 100 free (x 2) then 100 breast 100 free.
500 of drill/swim.
5 x 100 on the 2 (1:52, 52, 51, 53, 53) trying to get out of my laziness

50 back, 150 pull.
Weight: 196.8 before, 195.4 after.

Then a 4 mile walk; basically a modification of the 3 mile course, with a rectangle “to Cedar, around to Waverly then bag again, and an “almost lap” of Laura.

Saw some Bradley Basketball last night; men played Wesleyan and won 79-65. The lead did get to 20 at one point, and as close as 7 with 11 minutes to go. BU used everyone, worked on different things, etc. Place was kind of empty.

Different seats this year: next to nothing for these. I am at row 6 of the upper bowl.

Getting it figured out..

First: I was somewhat sore last night and wondered how much I could walk. It turns out that I handled 2 one mile walks easily and painlessly ..nothing residual. What I didn’t do is “belt squat” afterward. More on that later.

The workout: PT, walk 1, PT, walk 2, a bit more PT and then downstairs for some trap bar deadlifts:

10 x 134, 10 x 184 (low handle), 10 x 270 8 inch…went fine, no residual glute soreness.

This was much better than yesterday (especially walk 1)

What seems to bother the glute/nerve root: Pressure when the thigh is horizontal to the ground and the shin is vertical; in particular:

Presses (bench and seated shoulder) when I don’t have my legs up.

Squatting when I go deep and keep a relatively upright torso

Cycling in a recumbent; the upright cycling is better.

Horizontal thigh + vertical shin + pressure = glute pain, either then or after the fact.

Non-horizontal thigh is ok.

Baseball: I made a baseball game; it was a very painful 6-5 loss. This game featured a bit of everything:

Early, there were two outs and the second baseman fielded an easy grounder but their throw was too high; the first basemen had to go too high and came off of the bag. Chiefs should have been out of the inning. Next batter hits a home run (ok, really smacked the ball too) and now it was 2-0.

Next: runners on second and third …pitcher balks. So now it is 3-0.

The lead increased to 4-0 before the Chiefs rallied; 2 runs via a double with runners on base to make it 4-2, and later a big home run tied the game 4-4.

Sky Carp made it 5-4, but the Chiefs tied it ..and stranded runners.

Now to the top of the 9’th; 2 outs again, and the pitcher tried a pick off at 2’nd and it sure looked as if he got the runner, but the umpire said otherwise.

Next batter hits a shallow fly to center and the outfielder made an excellent diving try at the ball…had it for a moment but the ball popped out and the runner scored. Then the umpire threw out the Chiefs’ manager, so he ran out on the field and had some more things to say.

And that is how it ended: 6-5 loss, with many, many chances to have pulled it out.
