No, COVID-19 is not “Satan”

I am not a biologist so read about the virus from someone who is. What interests me is this: viruses change by mutation, and the principle of natural selection (and yes, genetic drift) determine what strains thrive and what strains die off.

In this case, the virus is an effective spreader precisely because so many have it but show mild to no symptoms at all. The virus has no “interest”; it just reproduces. The fact that it kills some and sickens many is just an artifact of what viruses do and how our bodies have evolved.

The virus has no “interest” in us whatsoever; it just reproduces. And the fact that it isn’t more lethal helps it thrive.
Oh, with time, humans will probably evolve immunity but that means a lot of deaths; that is how natural selection works. What this means for our society? Goodness knows.
